On this last Sunday gone members of WFFC flyfishing club which by the way was first established in 1939 held their annual New Members Orientation. As new members Dave Walsh and myself headed up to Kayak Point with boat in tow and Pink salmon on our mind. With the first rain after a record stretch of great sunny weather you might have almost called it a washout at 5am but that was not the case and pretty good conditions prevailed during the day.

We launched at the well maintained ramp and facilities provided at the Kayak Point park. From there we made our way down to the Southern end and into a bay that was holding a few pods of pinks. Several other members in a variety of craft and wading were also down that way fishing. Maybe more casting than fishing as the humpies were playing the lockjaw game and the only real "bite", for us anyway occurred right near the tide change. Dave TMFYB Walsh started of with a real nice fish that had shoulders .It gave him fun on his six weight outfit and once again it provided opportunity to snap more photos of Dave and his fish!

A few of the other members that were catching a fish or two down that way were Dave Schorsch and his partner (thanks for organizing the day it was excellent) and our club Ghillie , Mark Pratt. The fish seemed to turn on just for a short while and I was lucky to get a fish to eat a Pink Bunny Leech after having several refusals. While playing the fish out I set up the camera for my mate "One more cast" Dave to take a photo of the fish. During our last 3 trips together not one photo of moir's fish has been taken. Due in part to Dave's habit for just having "One More Cast" before he is ready to help out. This time I released the fish as he was picking up the camera. To be honest it has been a blast watching and listening to Dave holler and hoot while he has been catching some of his first saltwater fish on fly. We have enjoyed few laughs also with a bit of banter and ribbing that comes when fishing together also. Should have seen his face when I quipped at his best SWF fish to date "they are cute when they are babies". He is definitely stoked on the whole experience and can now count Silver and Pinks on SWF. The mooching gear may well take a back seat as the ocean Silvers start to move in.

At one o'clock we headed into Shelter 5 where already many members were taking a break from fishing and having a bite themselves. Several stories of despair and a few of success were bounced around with "what fly were you using"? a common question. Everyone seemed keen to get back on the water particularly as one of group was seen just off the beach with a bent rod during the feeding.

After as much chatting, food and drink we could fit into 40 minutes the draw of the water and fish took us back to the boat. This time however we had some drag on the back that slowed us down.

Bill Kuper VP and mad Scadden craft rider hooked on a rope and hitchhiked a ride back to the fishing area. It was the first time I have ever heard of Bill not looking forward to the fishing. When we finally released Bill and moved on it felt like we had just discovered that the hand-brake was on while driving down the I-5. Having lost track of the others at this stage we continued to flog the water to foam while fish jumped around the boat. Even a downpour that we thought would bring on the bite failed to produce another take. We gave in at 7 o'clock and headed for the highway. All in all New Members Day was a blast that saw us combine most things flyfisho's like to do and even a polite conversation had with some BUZZ BOMBERS could not ruin our day. Ahhh fly fishing it is food for the soul.......
Look forward to being there again next year. Thanks to all involved for making a great day even greater.
