We were recently sent a copy of the "Art of Angling Journal" as part of a drive for advertisers I would imagine. After having a read through this magazine and the inserted advertising information we thought why not review it.

The credo of this magazine reads "Dedicated to the best flies ,tackle and fishing on earth" and that fits in here at R&R in my opinion. I also did like the headline that stated "It's more like a book than a magazine" and found in this edition anyway (Vol 2 Issue 1) 232 pages jam packed with beautiful photos, artwork and information. The postman will need strong arms carrying more than a one copy of these magazines in his pouch as the paper stock is thick and of quality.

As mentioned there are many stunning visual presentations in this book. Many are of incredible custom tied flies that will have the Steelhead & Salmon fly-tiers drooling. The editors have gone to great lengths it seems to provide very large images on most pages and that is what first struck me. Certainly it would be a nice coffee table magazine and welcomed by anglers squirming nervously in dentist and doctors waiting rooms. One thing that was a little distorted by the large picture presentations were the actual stories and they appeared disjointed in some places. The layout may need some tweaking but it still early days for this mag. It was more obvious in the Amazon Bass story than elsewhere but imagine it being a hard decision to make those amazing photos spreads smaller to fit in text better.

One thing about the magazine that I am not sure about is the gold framing. Everything and I mean everything is framed in gold. While trying to figure out where that type of layout had been seen before my thought turned to the gold writings in chinese restaurants. On further inspection I discovered the magazine was printed in Hong Kong. Maybe the gold edgings of the layout is intended or its just influenced by oriental artistic style? All in all I found " Art of Angling Journal" to be good read and visually appealing (though I prefer silver over gold). It did contain a saltwater piece (snook) , the other stories were interesting and they did cover subjects not attempted by the now predictable and often boring mainstream magazines. Topics such as ornithology, tackle collecting, bamboo rod making are just some of the more offbeat subjects topics listed.

At $13.75 per issue it is in the high priced bracket but there are only 4 issues a year so those whom like it will no doubt fork out the bucks. Some high profile advertisers have also taken a look and thats reflected in the pages..My rating 8/10
