“Righto Dave, tomorrow morning at the Edmonds boat ramp” I said “6.30 am thanks mate see you then”. Having just finished on the phone with fellow WWFC club member Dave Walsh I jumped straight onto the internet and Expedia to find where the hell Edmonds boat ramp was. Its easier than trying to explain that I still have a hard time getting around this big city at times. Dave had a plan for fishing for Silver & Pink Salmon (Coho and Humpies) on fly around the Puget Sound area . Dave had been getting a few fish while “Mooching” with cut plug herring. For those who don't understand that, as I did not at first. You take a pilchard cut it in half with a beveled angle (so it will spin when dropped and retrieved) thread it on a two hook rig with a leader, swivel and banana sinker (weight/lead) and drop it to the bottom on an overhead outfit . A little more to it than just that but indeed it is an effective way to fish the water column for Salmon. Particularly useful in the salty depths of Puget Sound where the salmon hold up while awaiting the rains that starts their push upstream to spawn in freshwater.

Dave was waiting for me at the Edmonds boat launch. Here they launch your trailer boat by using a sling system. Between 6 and 7 am they launch boats and finish take outs at 7pm in the evening. This costs $22 dollars and includes parking for car, trailer and guest car.

We left Edmonds an headed across the sound to Bainbridge Island from here we spent the day working spots such as Point No Point ,Whidbey Island , The Wreck and Park. It was a partly cloudy day but comfortable. There was a minus tide in the morning and we found 5 of the WFFC members fishing a drop off from the beach south of Point No Point. They where having a
bit of fun on small Cohos using candlefish patterns and one bloke was using surface poppers. We on the other hand were experimenting with a few other patterns and using fulll length shooting lines, intermediate striper and shooting head outfits. Brian Mattchoss in South Australia makes a fly called a Click Clack that makes a sound when stripping and I gave it a run on the Silvers. I only had a 3/0 in white on board and it was last used catching the bejesus out of the Ladyfish at Punta Colorada . A little big I thought but the small fished gobbled it up and it also accounted for a few other species such as rockfish, flounder and sculpin.

I also used Dave “thats my fly you bastard” (tmfyb) pattern that accounted for a 4 good pinks... We fished all day and managed to get amongst a couple of good bites when the humpies were feeding and had a classic double hookup that gave us our first Humpies on fly. Lunch was prepared by Kate with pistachio garlic flavored nuts, baby clams and crackers for starters, chicken rolls and chips for main followed by lots of chocolate (French) cookies for desert. Wash that down with a couple of Coors beers and you've got a “Gourmet Day”.

On the 29th we headed back out for a morning session and hopefuly some more fun..we were not dissapointed but had to work hard for a bite. We both scored Silvers on fly and this was also a first for Dave. I have added some more photos below.
