Randall Bryett
Randall Bryett is a keen fisherman whom has tackled everything from bass to marlin on all types of tackle. His passion is saltwater flyfishing and he focuses on living the fishermans dream. When not traveling Randall who is Australian, resides in Northern California with his wife Kate and their two adopted cats.
What makes a new tackle item popular to flyfisherman? To me it is functionality and reliability. Well normally this would be the case but Jack Charltons new Mako Reels have grown men acting like teenage Japanese girls waiting for the latest cell phone with a Pokemon painted on it! Come on lets get reel here. There are a few test models out and about but not one fish have I seen of any substance been attributed to workings of the new reel. Ok I get it Jacks old reels are highly sort after and they are bullet proof, I've got
a few of them and USED them often before retiring them for my Islanders. They are great reels and I will be holding on to them but I just do not get the build up of excitement for these new ones. Is it investment or just something new? One thing is for certain to put faith in anyone who is currently holding a test model is a leap of faith into the unknown. To be fair Charlton is a talented machinist and designer so it should be pretty solid unit if these reels are half as good as the original and I'm sure everyone wishes him the best on the new business. Some rough pricing here at Just Reels.

The seems to be a lot of metal missing in the new reel. Must be light?

Interesting discussions about the MAKO reel on SOL. I suppose the big question is how the new design performs in comparison to the original Charlton. A post on SOL includes a quote from Jack himself:
"There is nothing proprietary to the Charlton reel drag system. It has been available for any manufacturer to copy as they wish. The only reason they haven't is no one has wanted to put that much money in their products (their words, not mine). As I designed both drag systems they share the same pedigree. Double sided, full contact, carbon fiber, multi-disk and self adjusting. Additionally we incorporate what I call "button technology" in the MAKO to further eliminate start-up friction. The MAKO drag disks are huge at 2 3/8 inch in diameter to provide the additional horsepower required as a result of building reels with extreme arbor diameters. The MAKO drag will smoothly and consistently stop a nuclear Aircraft Carrier. The Charlton is rated at only Heavy Cruisers. Charltons are still breaking world records and I expect the MAKOs to follow suit. I hope this helps. Best Regards ..... Jack |
