Randall Bryett
Randall Bryett grew up on the Sunshine Coast of Australia with some the worlds best fishing around every corner. He has worked in many aspects of the fishing industry including chasing the Giant Black Marlin at the prestigious Lizard Island. He is a avid fly fisherman who likes to find his own path. When not traveling he resides in Northern California with his wife Kate and their adopted cats.
Arriving back at SFO International and standing at baggage claim in customs I was amazed to see the amount of coolers sliding down onto the conveyor belt. Not long before the same fish that now are sliced and diced inside those boxes were swimming round the Sea of Cortez or the Pacific Ocean. I really do not get it, well I do and I don't . Why go into a foreign country and kill every fish you catch, stack the fillets in boxes and bring them back to throw in your freezer? 100lb or 200lb of Yellowfin and Mahi Mahi fillets will end up freezer burnt. In my opinion it really tastes like shit when it has been frozen anyway.
This is good story to highlight how people view their vacation fishing
as a food gathering exercise. Just because you pay X anount of dollars for a fishing trip does not mean you need to get that value back in in fish fillets. I also get really pissed when for example I see the Los Cabo's fleet sit on top of a juvenile Yellowfin school day after day bonking them on the head to appease their clients. Where do they think the giants come from?
