I guess that when you blog you can have your say and a chuckle. For the past year or so I have been having a bit of a laugh at the guys wearing Buff Headwear. The craze seems to be particularly taken up by Australians whom are rapidly becoming a large part of the saltwater fly scene. Unfortunately, internationally it is starting to creep into magazine pictures both hard copy and online versions. Look Buffs and bandanas are great sun protection and the folks at REI view product have been selling both items to skiers and the like for some time. I have found using a buff or bandana when wood working, 4WDriving , quad bike riding and when in need of hair control :-) are great items to use. BUT it really, really looks stupid to me when a angler is holding a fish in front of a photographer whom he knows will publish the photo somewhere does not take
a second to reveal his face. I like to see the persons face in a grab and grin shot. It says a lot about the situation and is a little more difficult to capture the magic of moment than just recording a pair of sunglasses and face mask. Hey it looked cool in Location X, it looks cool on guides whom do not give a rats about looks but care about skin cancer but it simply is dumb when you taking pictures to record your captures.
Other sun masks from makers such as Patagonia do not make such a fashion statement but are very functional. Marshall Cutchin whom claims to be the first guide to use full face balaclavas reports it works very well. read his report here
Don't get me started on colored clothing or crocs!!!
