Fly fishing no longer reels ’em all in: Business slow at local fishing shops in recent years

By BRETT FRENCH
Of The Gazette Staff

Billings fly fishing shops have seen less business in the last few years as drought persisted, the economy sagged and anglers looked elsewhere for entertainment.
“From what I've seen here, the local people have definitely dropped off,” said Jim McCall, owner of Rainbow Run Fly Shop.
Fly shop owners attribute the decline to other problems as well. For one, business picked up in 1993 after the release of the movie “A River Runs Through It,” based on the Norman Maclean novella. The movie, about the difficulties of Maclean's Montana fly-fishing family, glorified the sport. Picturesque footage of heartthrob actor Brad Pitt casting and catching huge rainbow trout put a flood of newcomers into neoprene waders.
