Hotel Punta Colorada

Approximately 20 kilometers south of Palmas de Cortez/Las Barilles is a turnoff from the highway called La Ribera, 18 kilometers to the town of La Ribera on a paved road, follow the signs to a dirt driveway (another 5 km), the driveway beings you to a wonderful stone arch. Driving through and down to the hotel I knew we were in for a treat. Hotel Punta Colorada sits atop a stone cliff and has been a mainstay to Sea of Cortez fisherman for many decades. Many of the guests we met had been coming here for 10 years or more. Beautiful stonework complimented the surroundings and from your comfortable dinner table outside you could watch huge roosterfish cruising by the rocks below. A stone walkway takes you down to a wonderful swimming or fishing beach. There is a small pool for use by guests above the hotel but with the ocean so inviting, who needed a pool? We rented a basic double room here. The room was small, very clean with a great AC and best of all - great water pressure! 2 double beds and 3 meals a day (plus coffee and water all day) cost $110 per day. The boat rental costs were the same as Palmas (same owners). The service was great, on a particular day a lightbulb blew and I though to myself “oh great, that will never get fixed”. By the time we returned after fishing, it was replaced without us asking. It is the little touches that make an impression. The dining area/bar was inside/outside, allowing you to decide what suited you best. The food was fine and I really liked this place. We found fantastic beaches to fish and the atmosphere was laid back and pleasant. The atmoshere and proximity to great beach fishing made it my favorite East Cape spot for this trip.
The hotel booking office for Punta takes cash/checks only. Also remember that at most East Cape Hotels you will be assessed a 10 to 12% tax and a 10% service fee which is supposed to be for staff gratuities.
